Back to Susan Pepper-Aisenberg Page

Susan Pepper-Aisenberg grew up in rural Pennsylvania, moved to RI to attend RISD and graduated with a BFA in painting in 1983. For the next twelve years she painted in and around Providence, on the waterfront and in neighborhoods. She had a wonderful eye for finding and isolating the beautiful, even in the most barren of concrete landscapes. In the mid 90's Susan married and moved to a small town in Massachusetts. She took some time off from painting to raise her daughter, and started up again just a few years ago, now devoting most of her time to painting scenery in northern Mass., Vermont and Pennsylvania.

"For now, I choose to paint mostly ordinary subject matter, staying open to the fact that artistic discovery may reveal itself in scenes that have been painted countless times." Susan wrote. "In the pure world of the eye, where feeling, thoughts and memory are excluded, everything is abstract..."

Hers is a bright vision that attempts to capture what's elusive: bursts of movement like the afterimage that defines a bird's line of flight, or a visual sensation equivalent to the sound of a swarm of insects at night.

Susan has been showing with us since 1987.
