Anne Huntington is co-founder and director of Po Gallery, a position she shared with her husband, Steve Palumbo, until his death in 2009.
I grew up in Providence RI, attended Classical High School, and took a few years off before continuing on to college. During that time I worked primarily in restaurants, traveled a little, pursued my interests in creative writing and tried my hand at various kinds of craftwork. I attended Rhode Island College, graduating Suma Cum Laude in 1984 with a BA in English/creative writing and a minor in Cultural Anthropology. I began weaving in 1984, and in 1986, together with Steve, I opened Po Gallery. From 1996 through 2008, in addition to running the gallery, Steve and I took care of Larry, a mentally disabled man in the neighborhood. Much of our work with Larry involved an informal and very individualized form of 'arts programming,' utilizing music, drawing, painting, movie making, story telling.
I started painting about 10 years ago. I paint with acrylics, on paper or canvas. The goal is to make something beautiful and my way towards that seems to begin with thinking about motion. My weaving and my interests in textiles have also had their influence, both on how I design a painting - many have a patterning or an intertwining of lines, and how I see and apply color. I am self-taught, or, more accurately, Steve taught me. We'd talk about painting, he'd demonstrate his techniques, always shared what he was up to and forever encouraged me to try something new.
