Back to Harold Baumbach Page

With a career that spanned over 70 years, Harold Baumbach holds a well-deserved reputation as a distinguished American painter.  He was admired by critics Lawrence Campbell and Fairfield Porter and respected by his friends and fellow painters Milton Avery, Adolph Gottlieb and Mark Rothko.  Baumbach had 24 one man shows in New York galleries, many in the vital 30's and 40's when his reputation flourished, and his work is in the permanent collections of major American institutions including the Whitney, the Albright, the Hirshhorn and the RISD museums.

NY Times arts writer Michael Kimmelman described Baumbach as a "...painter of dissonant color and irascible temperment..." whose early figurative work, over time "...became increasingly abstract explorations in color and spatial relations."  Baumbach had a lifelong commitment to his aesthetic vision.  He painted until he was almost ninety.
